I'm experimenting with new ways to design policy
This blackbox records my journey
I believe that creativity comes at the intersection of disciplines and in the context of constraints. I studied both Politics, Philosophy and Economics and Industrial Design, giving me a unique and broad perspective when looking at policy and social challenges. The designer in me loves to explore widely, mix research method, iterate and do. The PPE in me helps to situate work in a broader context of power, interest, incentive and trade-offs as well as helps question what ought to be. While experimenting with method is key to my work, what drives me is making better policy.
I've been applying design and innovation methods, including system and futures thinking across government since joining Policy Lab UK in 2017 as the government’s first Policy Designer. Today I continue to lead the team’s experimental work as its Head of Innovation & Design. Over the last 5 years I have been involved in 40 policy innovation projects ranging from day long Sprints to year long research and development projects working on topics from social housing to the regulation of autonomous ships.
